Josh thought he might be ill just catching a glimpse of Amy in the sanitary bed at the hospital. The whole room smelled of poison to him. And sadness swept over him. She was this shell laying there still with bandages wrapped around her head. It just couldn't be true.
His mother grabbed his arm.
"Is it really true? You're Leia's guardian?" His mother asked.
"I suppose," Josh winced. "I'm not sure what to do first."
"She's with Simon, she's fine." Josh kept staring at Amy. Nothing was actually fine. "I want to take Leia back to Amy's. Maybe she'll feel safer there. She'll have her old room back. We can't quite accommodate her over the Black Cat, now can we?"
"Josh, is that wise?" His mother looked at him as if he'd lost it, but he told her about Mr. Barnes and his winnings and how he had to live on an island just aways from Portugal for a year on some reality show. "It won't be for long. Til Amy wakes up."
"But what if she never wakes up?"
"Don't say that, Mum," Josh gritted then. "I don't know what else to do."
If this wasn't enough, there was the library to think about. He could get plenty of work now. He might as well put off this semester for his studies. There was Simon to think of as well. He knew he'd ask too much of him, already.
"Josh, you know we're here to help you," His mum said giving him a hug. "Does this mean the truth is out, you are Leia's father?"
"Mum, we've been through this," Josh smiled. "I don't think Amy would want Leia's father taking her right now. That's all, for the time being."
"You mean, Ste?"
"No." Josh shook head, no. "I won't keep her father from seeing Leia. I just don't think he's ready to take her on. He just found out about her." Somehow Josh knew it would take all of them to raise Leia.
